When starting and developing a new choir, I may keep repertoire light and fun for the first year to help singers feel comfortable and to attract new members. With each passing year, I would gradually introduce more challenging material, guiding students to discover "fun" in a variety of styles. The skill and experience of returning members is vital to the choir's growth and our potential to perform ambitious, diverse repertoire.
Stepping into a position with an existing choir, I want to meet them where they are, initially basing my selections on the history and abilities of the choir, the school personality, and expectations of administration, parents and students. Ideally, a choir regularly performs a balanced repertoire of classical, jazz, folk and pop selections with special attention to a healthy singing range when working with children's voices.
