Selected 4th & 5th graders from each of the eight elementary schools in the Milford School District (CT) rehearsed and performed in an annual spring "Cel-ARTS-bration." Music teachers met to select music for the concert and designate conductors/accompanists for each piece. I was selected to conduct "Mozart Mania."
In rehearsals I guided the young singers to heed the natural strong/weak patterns of syllables. (MO-zart, for example) Then we considered the larger element of phrase shape, with a slight crescendo into phrases and a decrescendo at the ends.
I have mixed feelings about adding lyrics to classical themes, but I have to admit this piece is humorous and charming. I even programmed it several years later on a NEST+m Youth Chorale concert.
